Dolphin Fish

Dolphin Fish are an open-ocean fish that swim fast, grow fast and die fast, living no more than 5 years.  They spawn year round in warm waters with their young living in floating sargassum weed.  This bright greenish blue backed fish has yellow on its sides and the capability to flash a wide range of colors.  Its tell-tale irregular blue or golden blotches scatter over the sides and its body tapers sharply from its head to its tail. They feed on squid and other small fish while cruising the offshore weed lines. Dolphin Fish are a favorite seafood item for many people.

Method of Fishing - Drift fishing, trolling and spinning

Tackle - Heavy spinning rod or a 20 lb class boat rod with 20 lb mono line and a 4/0 hook.

Bait - Fish, Plugs, and spoons. Troll natural baits such as ballyhoo rigged on #7 or #8 steel wire with a 7/0 or 8/0 hook. They can also be caught on artificial lures, feathers, or spoons. When a schooling Dolphin Fish is hooked, the rest of the school will often stay nearby. Chumming cut bait will bring them in and create a frenzy of activity.
